Marriage Stories Contest:
“Lady Lazarus”
“Lady Lazarus”, is a beautiful poem written by Sylvia Plath about her suicidal attempts and the feeling of anger and despair. “The Suicide Bride” story, also explores this darkness inside us, and the feeling of emptiness and sadness that we feel after we have been wronged by someone, or ourselves, or just like Sylvia Plath says, “Mr. Enemy”. To translate these feelings into wearable art I implemented the elements of the story into the pieces in the form of details such as the rope, to symbolize the way she chose to un-alive herself, in the color red that transmits anger, but also love, and horns that in a very literal way represent how she was cheated. To balance all of these elements and bring a sense of the tradition of marriage, the white, the lace, and the veil are recreated but still present.

“Dying
It is an art, like everything else.
I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell.
I do it so it feels real.
I guess you could say I have a call. It’s easy enough to do it in a cell.
It’s easy enough to do it and stay put.” -Sylvia Plath, “Lady Lazarus”
